• TJ Maxx is closing two stores in New York and Chicago.
  • Marshalls is closing a store in New York.
  • The closures come as parent company TJX reassesses its real estate strategies.

TJX, the parent company of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods brands, is closing stores in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Chicago.

According to local news reports and WARN notices filed by TJX Companies, at least three stores will close in January.

The closures come as the company reassesses its real estate strategies, a TJX spokesperson told Bronx News 12.

TJX filed a WARN notice on October 25 to notify the state of New York that it would be closing a TJMaxx store in Brooklyn and a Marshalls store in the Bronx. Both stores will close on January 6.

The filing said the closure would terminate 69 employees at the Brooklyn location and 100 employees at the Bronx location, on or around January 10. A spokesperson told Bronx News 12 that the company will offer affected employees jobs at nearby stores.

On Tuesday, Block Club Chicago reported that a TJ Maxx store in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago would close on January 6th.

TJX did not respond to Insider's request for comment in time for publishing.

Here are the TJ Maxx store locations confirmed to close:

  • 1008 South Canal St., Chicago, Illinois

  • 503 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, New York

Here is the Marshalls store location confirmed to close:

  • 610 Exterior Street, Bronx, New York

Despite concerns of weakened consumer spending, TJX has benefitted this year from bargain shoppers looking for deals. The company reported second-quarter same-store sales increased by 6%.

"Customer traffic improved sequentially each month of the quarter," chief financial officer John Joseph Klinger told investors in August.

Last month, TJX shut down the online shopping site for its discount home decor chain Home Goods.
